Hoenn is my favourite region, very varied, no route gates. The whole region actually feels like a large, tropical area that actually feels like an adventure rather than a walk down the street like modern regions.
The variety is great, Dex Nav is a perfect way to find the stuff you're looking for rather than just doing endless random fights until you get lucky, and after the E4 more pokemon appear on all the routes.
The plot is also my favourite, but plot has never been something to brag about in a pokemon game. All 3 starters are god tier, your rivals actually get some development and interaction this time around. Soaring means you don't have to carry around a Fly HM, this victory road is arguably the best looking one.
