And the problem we end up having is that since the early games good design choices are ultimately not that difficult, we kind of overrate them in consistently bringing them up. They weren't super-meaningfully open-ended and the difficult parts were usually the E4 and one or two stop-game gym leaders (though who those are can vary by team comp so hey), but those were all good things!
