It sort of dawned on me today, but there was that legend of korra series. Where two girls got together, one was the protagonist, but the way it was handled was they hold each others hands as they go through a portal and that is the end of the series.
Sure for some shippers it felt like they won, but on the other hand for other ones it felt like a bit of a letdown. As the romance confirmation was pushed back to the very end and meant you didn't get to see much of it. And while did a short comic series did come out that explored it a bit more that took a couple years. The only other positive stuff that came out of the confirmation was the fanart and fanfics, but those already existed.
