The biggest problem with Kalos, and XY as a whole, was that it tried to show off so many new things at once, and in turn didn't really elaborate on most of it for a really unfulfilling experience.
Coastal Kalos is pretty neat, and Central Kalos is alright, but like what most anons said they tried to shove in as many different environments as possible and made it feel really disjointed. Music was pretty nice, but wasn't memorable and didn't really feel like Pokemon music.
Even the story and characters were bland, they had like 3 different plotlines happening and none of them got any decent closure. Your "friends" are all one-dimensional, Sycamore is probably the least competent professor in the entire series, Team Flare is a bunch of dumb airheads and the Gym Leaders/E4/Champion are all basically nonexistant outside of Korrina.
The only characters that had the potential to be interesting were Lysandre and AZ, the former was so disjointed from his team being buffoons that it made his goal and character just seem ridiculously out of place, the latter isn't even relevant outside of expository shit.
I REALLY liked a lot of the new pokemon and I really wish they were more prominent. Having a huge regional dex made it so there were like 10-15 pokemon on any given route, which meant the encounter rates blew ass.
Plus, the Legendary Pokemon are touched on for like one scene and they just up and hand themselves to you.
I had really high hopes after Gen 5 showed they were trying to be more ambitions in the story and character department, but with XY they completely disregarded [or forgot] everything they did right and instead regurgitated a bunch of old favourites with a shiny new gimmick and gave us a region full of fluffy, light shit that it didn't really feel like anyone cared about anything.
