I always liked him from the moment he was revealed, but he didn't become my #1 until I used him in Colosseum and he steamrolled everything in his path, all the while being the most nonchalant happy dope in the face of danger. Anything that is basically a giant blob with a :) face is peak character design to me. In fact, I love this line so much that my new top three of all time are Quagsire, Wooper, and Clodsire.
My ace? Clodsire is definitely one of my most reliable Pokemon on my Scarlet team, and Quagsire is usually pretty solid whenever I use him, but I'm not sure if they're ace material. These guys seem more than content not to hog the spotlight, which is part of what I like about them. My Pikachu? Maybe Wooper, but there are several other little guys that I'd rather have perched on my shoulder, like Swirlix, Rookidee, Zigzagoon, or Shinx. They just seem more cuddly and pleasant to the touch than a slimy axolotl.
