I prefer sprites always (particularly gen 4, before things got stupid), but Pokemon GO made me like the models a bit more. The 3DS models are high-poly as fuck, so they translated well to an "HD" game paired with higher-res textures.
But the models still lose to sprites due to some Pokemon's proportions being fucked up and the sin they committed against flying-types when they made them all constantly flapping/gliding. We don't even have fucking sky battles anymore, so PLEASE put Xatu back on the ground. For fuck's sake.
