They don't have to rip off everything about the region.
Unova's only very loosely based in the NYC area. It's not obvious, and there's only like 3 Pokémon that are based on American stuff. There's even Egyptian Pokémon there (Yamask and Cofagrigus). But this time, they went full Hawaii and it's fucking annoying because of how obvious it is.

Lets pretend that Gen V never happened. We just went directly from Gen IV to Gen VI. None of the pokemon, abilities, or moves from Gen V exist, any changes from IV to V never happened, (no reusable TMs, ??? type still exists, poison still hurts outside of battle, no hidden abilities, etc.) and Gen VI didn't change those things either.

How different would the series be?
