Personally I kind of liked that they went with a team "theme" for her instead of pigeon-holing her into just following a type for the sake of tradition or whatever. But I'm a hypocrite I guess because I would have liked if she reconfigured her team a little after becoming Spikemuth's gym leader, to have a fully dark-type loadout. Basically she shouldn't be using Toxicroak. Marnie should have had an Umbreon or a Houndoom instead of Liepard though, they both match her aesthetic a lot better than some ugly leopard thing. I don't know why she has Mawile in Masters.
Also, remember that in Japanese, the "dark" type doesn't refer to "dark" as in color or shading, but instead the word used for the type literally translates to "evil." Marnie doesn't use "poorly illuminated" pokemon. She uses "evil" pokemon. That's why her ace is Grimmsnarl, a combination fey troll and devil.
