Nonsensical bans and tierings are just business as usual for smogon. From the moment they banned Wobbuffet and Garchomp in gen 4, they crossed a line at which things being actually broken wasn't required for a ban, and it has gone that way ever since.
Often they make long arguments about luck. They're all disingenuous because of the simple fact that luck dominates in Pokemon anyway. A wide number of good moves might miss, all attacks might crit, flinches and full paralysis can shift the course of games, sleep has variable duration... Playing Pokemon well is all about understanding probability and just maximizing your odds. Whether the math you're playing with involves a Focus Blast hitting or your opponent hitting themselves in confusion, it really makes no difference. Luck is so integral to Pokemon that any argument about reducing it is honestly just a joke on its face; the real motivations involve preserving a game that plays similarly to their traditional gameplay, and Klefki is a threat to that.
It's patently uncompetitive, but then again, I'm not so sure Smogon was ever about actual competitive gameplay in the first place. It's clear 6v6 singles isn't even designed to be a competiive format in the first place and that's what Smogon is all about, a solution is very evident. They mostly don't even play the real game and instead play on simulators; they even make themselves easy to ignore so just do that.
