In universe I understand what they are and yeah it's like a little outside boost. I don't understand OPs problem with that. It's kind of like a half-evolution.
However, I don't like mega evolutions and I never will. I feel like it doesn't actually address any of the balance issues that pokemon is facing. We're now reaching a place where using your favorite weak pokemon will be a disappointing experience because they'll be so much weaker than the high tier pokemon. What gamefreak is doing is only pushing the distance between these two by buffing strong pokemon even further and buffing a select few weak pokemon to that level. We're left with Beedrill, Magcargo, Luvdisc, and a grip of other pokemon left even further behind.
It's not a smart fix. We need a complete overhaul on old pokemon, not little bandages to a select few.
