i always felt something was a lot worse about mons since oras but i never had a solid thing to point to being the culprit. it was always just that teams were way too safe and pivots, especially with regen or magic guard, negated most of the risk for teams more reliant on chip damage defensive cores to win. the game was just a slow bleed out where one wrong move puts you so behind but making the right move was just one in the ten steps you have to take to break a team. theres now in late gen 8 so many mons that check or counter half the meta game that dont really have reliable counters. look at toxapex ffs. you cant break it with set up mons because of haze, its check needs to be able to survive poison turns while it recover stalls, rocks damage is meaningless to it because of regenerator, you cant use physical mons unless they are able to tank scald and wont care about burns, and you cant use choiced mons unless you scout its entire set because it could have knock. not to mention that despite its low offensive stats its not at all passive because of toxic, tspikes, scald, knock off, and haze. its a mon that checks half the tier, it can threaten 2 statuses, it cant be set up on, it cant be worn down, it cant be chipped by hazards into ko range, it cant be toxic'd, and it can knock. there is no offensive pokemon that is nearly as absurd as toxapex. thats a running theme, mons just do too much and require too many things to check them so the meta becomes stale. this survey kinda validated my concerns about the meta being unbalanced and unfun and sucking ass in general. look how much people are tired of dealing with.
