You're underestimating how large things on the map really are. It's not 1:1, but I tried to outline things as clearly as I could here to translate what we're seeing vs what is on the map. They were just at the top of that lake. The cliff in the map is way larger than it looks, that's all.
There's also a fuckload of trees over bast the edge of that image that would obscure any open pathway from this angle, especially with how murky the weather effects are.
