I'll give you that the environments aren't pushing any limits, but how are you wanting the character models to be improved beyond what we already have?
They're all smooth, colorful, got a decent shader, etc. What more could be done here?

The leak listed 2 other rivals for the League.
You got Hop who's the friendly rival (though maybe he'll start to break with an inferiority complex living in his brother's shadow when we beat his ass every time). Leon is endorsing both the PC and Hop
Then there's a rival named Bede who is being sponsored by Chairman Rose. Rose originally endorsed Leon so it'll be interesting to see what Bede is like.
And then there's Marnie who we don't know the sponsor of. But he/she is apparently super popular and Team Yell is a group made up of his/her fans that are causing trouble, likely for others in the League they see as threats to Marnie's rise.

Sonia is apparently Leon's childhood friend and, according to the leak, his former rival. Now she's basically gonna do the Professor duties this game. Magnolia is probably gonna do jack shit all game.

In the old games the overworld models just had textures for mouth and eyes, but in S/S so far every NPC has at least a real mouth rig. It's hard to tell but I think they also all have full eye rigs as well this time.
In USUM, only the battle/cutscene models had mouthrigs and I don't think any of them had eye rigs.

I said technically. As in the animation is very minimally different and very minimally more expressive purely from having the mouth movement. Not that it is actually really different or much more expressive.
And of course that animation will be used in other characters. It's clearly a generic animation for the generic cutscenes in the game. They save the actually unique animations for the major cutscenes and trainer battle animaitons.

How would you have Sonia here be any better for a pre-rendered cutscene?
In SM, there were I believe 2 different models for each character: the overworld one which had a texture face and was relatively low poly, and a battle/cutscene one that had texture eyes, sometimes a mouth rig, and higher poly with more articulation.
This time, they're one and the same. The overworld characters look and can move the same as they can in battle and cutscenes.
