The lack of a fully defined idea of how the move system works outside of the games pretty much lends this to become part of that "don't worry too much about it" mentality they have.
I personally have the Pokemon set with a handful of moves that they outright specialize in and can do special variations of while other moves they can use but are less proficient/potent with. But otherwise there is no hard cap on the latter. And speaking of which I need to update the Pokemon section of Emily's bio to reflect certain recent 'specialization' choices.
