My general rules for choosing candidates:
>"color coding"
>appearance is very heavily emphasized into that one type, even if they have 2 types
>must be recognizably so as the "definitive" Pokemon of the type TO A PERSON WITH LITTLE TO NO KNOWLEDGE of Pokemon. Like, they stare at a Pokemon and think "yup, that's the most X of all Pokemon for sure"
Explanations:
>Roselia
It's green, has leaves on its body, and has VERY OBVIOUS roses for hands. Grass it is!
>Magmar
Red, yellow, with both a flaming tail AND butthead!
>Water:
It's blue, has a fin, is based on an aquatic animal (seahorse), and has a body that appears to not be functional on land, which can only lead to the logical conclusion of it being a creature of water.
>Eevee
This was tough. I decided to go with Eevee because it's the most "generic" of the typical, small, brown, mammalian Pokemon that Normal type is stereotyped with having. I guess Lillipup or something could apply just as well, but Eevee also has that whole evolution thing going for it, so it's the most "neutral" in my eyes.
>Elekid
Yellow, has a lightning bolt on its chest, and has a plug head. Duh.
>Hypno
Yeah, this was the hardest one to do. There's no Pokemon out there yet with an exposed brain or visually emphasized brain, so I had to go with the next best thing, which is the Pokemon that's physically holding a pendulum. He's not even "color coded", either! Well, shiny Hypno is, at least.
>Hitmonchan
Machamp or one of its stages could fit this, too, but I chose Hitmonchan because he has very overt red boxing gloves.
>Onix
He's a giant snake MADE UP OF rocks.
>Diglett
Diglett actually has dirt as a part of his design, and is never seen without it. Sorry, Hippowdon :(
>Swablu
Light blue, a (non-flightless) bird, and has cloud wings. Flying it is!
>Caterpie
Yeah, he's pretty much just a spicebush swallowtail caterpillar and is barely/not anything else. The buggiest of the bugs.
>Muk
A big purple sludge monster. That's all.
