For example Gen 7 has the lowest degree of player agency as it keeps you in a constant stranglehold with its narrative. You have no choice in how much you engage its story, and very little choice in how you explore the region since it's mostly linear and has only lackluster level design. On the other hand Gen 2 has the highest degree of player agency as the regions have less linearity to them than others, they give you a lot of choice (relatively) regarding where to go and what to do, and their story/lore aren't forced upon you, instead you can go looking for it yourself if you care about it, while those who don't can choose to ignore it.
