Colloquially, it means insect. In the non-scientific sense, bug is a broader term but still clearly defined.
In Pokemon, bug really just means invertebrate. Any kind of creepy-crawly is a candidate for Bug typing.
Interestingly, I was originally really rustled about Crustle and Dwebble being Bugs, until I learned in my coursework that crustaceans are closer to insects than arachnids are and I had always given the spidermons a layman's pass. Go figure!
