Make sure you have a online pass. Press Y, select communications. To trade over online, press Faraway player. From there enter in the unique code that looks for others (i.e. pikachu x3). From there select your pokemon to trade and click A to confirm once your partner trades a pokemon you want.

Same idea as trading except instead of clicking trade in the communication menu you press single or duel battles.
