the general idea is that he's a NEET who for the longest time wanted to become a researcher/professor, but dealt with some personal stuff and kinda shut down for a while. but after a chance encounter, the player character inspires him to get out there again. you bump into him every now and again doing field research which prompts a battle. he'd have evolved or leveled up pokemon from the general area you find him in, constantly changing all except for an ace that i haven't decided on yet. around the midgame he becomes more involved being able to explain story stuff and phenomenon. his story arc ends with him writing a proper essay on the journey the player character had and what they witnessed, which leads to them getting recognzied and (after a proper timeskip) achieving their dream. albeit they've still got a bit of a lazy streak, hence the sweatpants and slippers and stuff...he likes the coziness of at-home life still, but he can't deny his love for research and pokemon n shit.
typing this out i realize how similar this is to the professors daughter in swsh. shit.
