zoomers on /vp/ can screech all they want, but digimon is the only other franchise in the genre that has any nostalgic value and brand recognition for '90s kids. even if they aren't active fans of the series, people still remember the first season of the anime, the virtual pets, the trading cards, and digimon world 1. they have something to work with there that yo-kai watch and indie shit are never going to have.
people also miss the point when they complain about digimon's aesthetics. no franchise is ever going to succeed against pokemon by trying to copy it one-to-one. that's been done a million times already and it never works. digimon, like pokemon, has its own identifiable style that isn't easy to duplicate.
the only way it ever happens is if bandai pulls its head out of its ass, gives digimon a lot more funding and support than they currently do, and gives the anime to a better studio than toei.
