I'm the amateur working on the Doubles/Kaizo hack of Fire Red. Recently, with a lot of help, I made Clefairy and Pikachu show up after you got your starter. I did this to ensure that you didn't accidentally run into a Double Battle with only one Pokemon; if you do, the game engine will clone the only Pokemon you have with you, breaking the party menu and causing issues when you visit a Pokemon Center. It's a nasty bug, so I wanted to ensure it didn't happen.
I thought about making Clefairy hold a ThunderStone and Pikachu hold a Moon Stone. As a joke. But instead I decided to give them each a Link Cable, an evolution item that makes Graveler, Haunter, Kadabra, and Machoke evolve, of which there will only be one in the game.
