>>56072213Gen 5 was the last gen before they started power-creeping the starters. The starters were designed with their campaign performances in mind. Gen 6+, Game Freak realized that they could put in 2% of the effort they used to and still sell gorillions so they gave up on making the game fun and focused all their energy on trying to sell plushies and promote VGC.
By the time you hit Gen 8, every starter now has a defined niche and they all have at least 1 signature move/ability, sometimes both.
