I did remove some of the red knobs -- I didn't completely see their point from a functional standpoint (in b4 "they're for _____!"). I left the pattern, as the body was plain without it, but I did dull the color slightly. Yes, early gen Pokemon did have bright colors, but Excadrill spends time underground, so I didn't see the need for such a bright red.
Early gens did often have a simplified color pallet, though, so I used the same color for the markings as the nose.
