Mega Banette is almost always strictly weaker compared to Mega Gengar, the only time it's better being when you're fighting a psychic-type that knows Confusion and either Psychic or Psyshock. Anything else and Mega Gengar will still have higher TDO. I'm still excited, since Banette is my favorite Pokémon that is capable of mega evolution, but I'm aware that it's not gonna be making all that much of a difference for me.
Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the reason the Verizon research gives Mega Gengar energy is because they plan on making Mega Gengar the legacy staple (either now or in the future), making Mega Banette the only one available in raids, or at least for this season.
