I want them to really go all-out on the open world concept in the next gen. Ideally, there would be multiple, separate ones connected by routes and having the size and complexity of the overworks areas in XC2.
I really want some complex puzzle-oriented dungeons too, especially now that random encounters are done away with.
Aside from that, I really hope they restore the national dex in the next games, especially since Sword and Shield will have close to 3/4 of all the Pokemon in it anyways.
I also really hope they can find a way to utilize both Megas and Gigantamaxes / Dynamaxes. I really, really hate to see Pokemon designs go to waste.
Expectations?
They will improve and expand upon the Wild Area concept. There probably won't be vast overworlds like I want above, but I do think it'll be bigger, have more to do, and will ultimately be more fun than the Wild Area we go in Sword & Shield.
Dungeons will probably still be light and breezy. Egh.
They probably also won't have the national dex back. If the base game could have 500 mons or so in it, I'll be fine.
Gigantamaxes / Dynamaxes will be replaced with some other gimmick. Maybe fusion evolutions / forms?
One thing I am looking forward to are more regional variants, especially now that they're no longer restricted to Gen I monsters and are doing their own interesting things with unique evolutions. Fortunately, this feature seems here to stay.
Another thing I'm REALLY happy about is that beefy DLC packs are seemingly replacing 3rd versions. I think this is a fantastic way to get the most out of your Pokemon games (so long as the base games feel like complete experiences, which Sword & Shield unfortunately don't really feel like to me), and might help out with the "yearly release" issue that Pokemon was obviously dealing with for a while.
