Advanceshipping had far better and romantic hints than Amour and didn't require anything like forced one sided kisshu. It was the best choice alongside Peal and Pokeshipping because the shipping does not require to break the status quo before the show ends or Ash grows up.

Because May is no longer the only girl to replace Misty. AG was the first series to replace the lead girl like Misty therefore many fans were against May and convinced about Misty being Ash's endgame. After all, do you think people would accept Serena that easily if XY series took place right after Jotho and Serena was the first character to replace Misty? In fact, majority of fans would have saw Serena as a bland girl that trying to get between a true couple like Ash and Misty.

Advanceshipping is still popular. You can see people bashing Pokeshipping and Amourshipping but you don't see many people basing Advanceshipping. Because there aren't many thing wrong with this shipping. Most Anti-adavanceshipper just tries to use Drew against this shipping. But if writer decides to make this shipping canon than I don't think there would be any big backlash since there is nothing to blacklash about this shipping.
