-Satoshi then has to fight his main rival, and he wins
-He loses next round to the powerful trainer, who then proceeds to win the league

Indigo League: It's a mess
Johto: 100% this
Hoenn: 100% this, although Satoshi doesn't really have a main rival
Sinooh: 100% this
Unova: It tries to subvert this format (Satoshi beats his main rival in the first round and never gets to fight the winner because he loses to fucking Cameron)
Kalos: 100% this, though Alain was introduced earlier
Alola: 100% this, except Ash defeats both his main rival and the powerful trainer
