The seethe was well warranted. But in a way I'm grateful because they've been desperately trying to apologize ever since. The Kalos loss is why Ash became champion in Alola and eventually World Champion in Journeys. They also had Alain get crushed by Leon, but that was just going too far.

More like they wanted to avoid Alain losing to Ash despite pressure to it. Since there is nothing embarrassing losing to the former undefeated World Champion ONCE. The anime purposefully made Ash's battle on Master Tournament controversial to make Alain look stronger.

Yes , there never been such blunt display of favoritism. The original writers didn't favor Ash but they also made sure everybody else goes though the same treatment as Ash to keep it fair until Alain happened.
