The Gen1-6 leagues set too high a standard. yeah, SM and JN had nonsense trash leagues but that's just expected from the nu-ashnime. If there's one thing the ashnime always got right it's the sense of competition in this stuff - Ash isn't the "special" protagonist, each one of his opponents is just as much a protagonist of their own story, Ritchie even had a Pikachu, Paul had a similar ambition, Alain also met legendaries, etc.
So victory in the league is not decided by protagonist power but rather by actual battle tactics/luck/training/strategies which made it all good.
I really don't think the Riko arc will span another 1000+ episodes to really invest in the whole tournament setups, it wouldn't look good in the modern format anyways.
It'll probably focus more on Villain Team arcs, personal drama or whatever.
