No that something Digimon fans , Pokespe fags and Shonen fags wanted. Majority of fans just wanted Ash to win an actual league conference in a region with GYMS and full closure to his unfinished rivalry with past rivals such as Alain.

Ash never defeated him so that beats the entire purpose of him being a rival. XY&Z was so obsessed with pandering Alain that they never bother writing an actual rival. Yajima version of Ash is basically "Look how awesome cool action bastard Ash is when beating up little children in a fight'.

Imagine next series where Ash balanced the power of all the champion by taking the top spot. Lance has another battle with Diantha on Paldea which he wins by using Terastalize Dragonite to Fire type. Cynthia and Leon has three battle with each of them has one victory and the third one ends in a draw. Nemona replaces Alain in Master Eight.

Too bad that OLM isn't smart enough to do this.

Speaking like an Alain self inserter.
Alain is trainer that Ash must defeat himself no matter how many proxy the series uses to avoid that. Its like saying there is no point in Ash defeating Paul after Brandon sweep him or there is no point in May defeating Drew after she defeated Grace and Timmy who curbstompped Drew. There are many trainer that we want Ash to defeat even if they are weaker than Leon and Alain is number one on that list.

If Alain appears at all it should only be if they decide to have some kind of follow up story to the Team Flare/Ash-Greninja arc and not so he can have a pointless power level battle with Ash. Even then I'm not sure how much relevance Alain has. That and Ash-Greninja is dead.

An Ash vs. Alain rematch isn't important to me, honestly. I wouldn't have objected though to Alain being an opponent of Ash's in the Great or Ultra Class. I think we needed more PWC battles in general, with Ash facing both familiar faces and new ones. Ideally, every PWC match that involved someone from Ash's past would've gotten two episodes, had it been up to me. One episode where the character is reintroduced and Ash/Goh have interactions with them (and maybe solve a small problem of some kind) and the next episode would be the PWC battle.

I want them to really interact again, and Ash finally beating Alain would be the culmination of his development since the Kalos League, as well as being an opportunity to show how far Alain has atoned and come as a person since the Kalos Incident
