It was his pseudo-Legendary that couldn't get the job done.

If Ash is a bad trainer, most of Kalos' trainers are bad, which means even Alain must be a bad trainer, which means the distinction between "Good" and "Bad" becomes arbitrary. You must define the metrics of a "good" trainer before making sweeping statements like that.
