Nobody asked to put TWO CHARIZARD TRAINER on Master Eight, there was no point of putting Alain in the Master Eight if Ash wasn't meant to defeat him. Instead they could have used him as Hyper Class opponent or Master Class promotional opponent.

At the end, Alain was included on Master Eight because the writer wanted to show how awesome Alain is for being on Master Eight without being a Champion.

Alain is extraneous to that theme, Ash should have fought Cynthia in the finals, after beating Steven to keep the 3, 2, 1 setup and Iris should have beaten Lance and then got crushed by Leon. The semifinals would have been two representatives of the new generation taking on the two strongest Champions of the old one and where one would overcome his opponent, the other would fail, further establishing Leon as the wall that has yet to be surmounted and Ash's struggle wouldn't be just his personal desire to win but also to avenge his friend.

To this day I contend that Alain was a last minute addition. I'm sure they initially intended to have Raihan be in the tournament, given his popularity and canonical skill, but the whole voice actor cheating on his wife thing made them reduce Raihan's role to being Ash's final qualifier.

There's definitely a problem with Ash fighting two Charizards in a row, so you either have Alain use something else, or put him on the other side of bracket and have Ash do a proper 6v6 with Iris instead. I don't have a problem either way, but I think having the SwSh message of the younger trainers surpassing their elders is too good to pass up.

Diantha should have lost 1st round, lots of precious screentime went to the worst participant.

Iris should have talked to Lance for some dragon trainer bonding.

Steven should have been like a mentor to alain.

Generally the m8 should have hung out at a banquett or something to give them more dynamic/build up instead of heading straight into powerpoint battles

Reminder that Leon's Charizard has never been portrayed as being broken in the anime and it always struggles against other champion's aces.

The only pokémon it's defeated effortlessly was Alain's Charizard but that's because Alain is far below the level of regional champions
