And remember this was right after the frog got back to train Lucario so thinking that they're bringing him back for the runback wasn't THAT crazy of an idea at the time. Alas, we underestimated how much of a bunch of hacks they are. They genuinely thought that people would be satisfied by making Alan go through an humiliation ritual against the biggest most plot armored gary stu in the anime and that consequently Ash beating him with even more plot armor would make people think "yes, this totally makes up for the Kalos League Ash beating Leon means he's stronger than Alan so now I'm happy" which anyone with half a brain knows it completely misses the point. You know they completely botched it when even Alan haters disliked what they did with him.
And it's really easy to forget, but Alan was generally well-liked before the Kalos League. He simply became a symbol of such a massive failure, so started to get hate through association.
Honestly, Alan is a victim of all this as well.
