There's other stuff, but all this seemed like the obvious no-brainer shit they should have done. I guess Ash beating Alain would've been a bit shlocky, but fuck it, who cares, the stupid show was ending anyway, just fucking do it.

Leon and Ash can use all three gimmicks, but Leon uses all 3 on Charizard (He uses Mgea Charizard Y, Inferno Overdrive, and Gigantimax)

It is a shonen cliche, the previous big bad boss is defeated by the new one, in this way you show how powerful the new antagonist is without needing to develop it, it is a cheap resource.

I'm not complaining about using Alain, but it must have happened before the 8's tournament and as someone commented, included Tobias being defeated in an exhibition fight, but not by pure power, but with real strategy on the part of one of the veteran champions (Like Alder, Peony, or Mustard), this would have established the difference between a trainer with strong Pokémon and a strong trainer.

Regarding place 8, I would have preferred a champion like Wallace or even an advanced cameo of a young adult Geeta as the Dark horse of the tournament, they had already done this before with Pokemon like Blaziken, Kecleon and Electivire, at first it would seem like an OC that came out of nowhere with a Gogoat, Bisharp, and at the end reveal her Glimmora, when defeated she would reveal herself to be the recent champion of a region south of Kalos and Galar.

Essentially the only thing they did wrong was they made Ash's opponents weaker, they took them down to Ash's level. It should have been the other way around, built up at least over the course over the entire Journeys series.

That and they should have spent more budget on the animation for the battles. Take inspiration from XY. And Tobias should have been there, probably in place of Alain.

Iris doesn't have a chance in hell based entirely on team composition, but her defeating the most iconic champion other than Lance would've been one hell of an upset.
>Ash vs Steven
Steven loses, but pushes Ash to his last pokemon to show that Ash is not going to win easily.
>Iris vs Ash
Even match, ending in a tiebreaker with Dragonite vs Dragonite. Ash could very well have lost if not for Iris' Dragonite fainting first. Not a stomp, but a damn close match that could very well have ended the dream.
>Leon vs Ash
This was Ash's best battle of the series. I'd just cut it so that every battle was dramatically close and even. Each side losing one pokemon in a back and forth exchange like the spies in Spy vs Spy, ending the same way as the anime did.

Lance and Iris got shat on in the most god awful ways. Especially Iris, god damn I can't get over how fucking retarded her plan was. "Rush into the draco meteor and power through it!" was the dumbest idea, and whoever wrote that deserved to be canned.

Anyways. Not much needs to be done. But all it would require really is spending time with all these champions more.

Have mini arcs involving each of them in sone way shape and form.

Like easy example have Ash and Iris talk about their view points on being champions for a region and show the cultural differences more. Have an Arc where Iris helps Ash actually train his dragonite even.

Have an arc where Alain and Ash get their mega stones with Alain telling Ash he's aiming for the top just like him. You can include Steven Stone in there as well.

Or you could actually build a tangible connection by having Ash and Steven maybe a self retrospective arc on what Ash wants to do if he ever did become a pokemon master. Steven shows Ash hobbies that he enjoys doing. Thjs arc could focus on lucario and gengar as well.

Ash and Cynthia could've had way more to talk about alongside Ash and Leon but both already have a bigger connection then the others outside of Iris.

Lance could easily appear to help Ash battle another organization and maybe this arc could also focus on Dracovish in some way

What I'm getting at here is give the champions way mire presence then they had.

I feel like Ash's character in journeys should've been him realizing that he's a champion to a group of people and what that means.

Thus ultimately allowing the masters 8 to be more impactful and Ash's realization at the end of ATBAPM more impactful as well.

Greninja being built up as this special unique shonen form having pokémon only benefitted Alain's Charizard when it destroyed him, it's like building up a character to job to make the winner look even better.
