I wouldn't be surprised at all if Ash ends up at the end of the Kalos sage telling Serena how good of a friend she is to him, before he goes off to the next region to either git gud some more or get battered and fugged by the stupidity log that is the obligatory new region reset plot that always happens. And all whilst he only takes Pikachu and (possible) smogon froge with him whilst leaving the others to be stuck in the pet shop of horrors that is the current state of Oak's lab now.
No matter what grill tries to win the Ashbowl, you and I both know that Pikachu and other pokemon won that a LONG time ago. It'll be Ash either solo, or with a new female trainer and new gym leader partner once Alola's sage begins. And all whilst Pikachu basically has Ash all to themselves forever more, because so long as Serena ain't a pokemon, she will never win the Ash.
