What I would have done to fix BW, assuming the same cast and Pokemon had to be kept:

- Oshawott would have evolved mid-way into the Gym run

- Pignite would fully evolve right before the league. It really was Ash's ace of the saga, Pignite was used in 5 Gyms and the Junior Cup. A travesty it didn't fully evolve.

- Scraggy and Boldore should have definitely evolved somewhere along the way.

- Ash would beat Trip in one of the Don battle tournaments, having him lose to him continuously till the league was pointless

- Have Iris' Dragonite mess up for her repeatedly until she could tame it

- Have the Plasma stuff happen throughout the saga

- Have Ash beat Cameron but lose to Virgil in the Top 4.

- Scrap Declora's Island entirely and make another tournament arc.

Few more observations after now having watched about 70% of BW:

- Ash doesn't act like he doesn't know what old pre-Unova pokemon are. When he uses his Pokedex on old pokemon, he never says, "What's that?" like with Unova pokemon. Also Dawn of all people scanned Cameron's Riolu...heh.

- Ash really isn't dumb in BW outside of the usual episodes. His team is weaker so it makes him look like a worse trainer, but in battle he's about on the level of late Johto or early AG Ash. So he's weaker than in DP but not back to square one.

- BW's animation during battles is actually pretty impressive.

- Neither Iris nor Cilan are annoying really. Iris' "what a kid" doesn't even come up much after the very early episodes, and in most eps she roots for Ash to win. Besides that she just has the usual generic dialogue any female companion has. Cilan's personality can be overbearing at times but I'm used to it for him.

If I had to rate BW so far, I'd probably say 6.5/10. It's not a great season, but it's nowhere as bad as people make it out to be.

Finished the Junior Cup, some things amuses me almost a decade later:

- Ash beats Iris' Dragonite in this ep and Cameron's Riolu is introduced in the last ep. So weird watching this now with the knowledge that Ash himself gets a Dragonite and Riolu 8 years later. Like...it's a surreal feeling.

- Dawn came back for 9 episodes...but she only gets screentime in like 3 of them. She's basically in the background for a Cilan detective ep, and the ep Iris captures Dragonite. Then the Junior Cup is 4 episodes but she only gets one full battle in the second ep which of course she loses. In all the other eps she's just standing in the sidelines with the others commenting on everyones battle.

- Dawn's only pokemon to get screentime in this is Piplup (during the intro eps and fillers), Mamoswine during the Iris battle, and her Quilava has a quick match with Pikachu before she leaves. Her Buneary, Pachirisu and Togekiss literally do nothing in this return and you only see them briefly in her intro and goodbye scene. Sad for those pokemon.

- Georgia/Burgundy's last episode, and they get such a generic farewell. It didn't even really feel like this was intended to be their last episode, why didn't they both get one more ep during Declora Island or something?

Ash is really only portrayed as stupid in key points in BW most remember (first battle with Trip, Elesa, the Cameron battle), but everywhere else in the series he's portrayed as pretty competent, not DP level, but somewhere between Johto and early AG level.

I let the internet wrongly tell me Ash was terrible at battling all throughout the BW, but then after marathoning all the Gyms and Don battle tournaments I can see that was all a lie. Most of the battles had great strategy, animation and battling going on. I'd put Skyla, Clay and Brycen on the level of any DP/XY battle. While the others ranged from above average to good.

This is...completely wrong. His loss to Iris' Excadrill was done very well, Pikachu didn't get beaten easily, it went toe to toe with it for a good while but then just got beaten. Excadrill being ground where Pikachu couldn't use electricity either was reasonable.

In the second tournament he used Scraggy the whole way, and Scraggy lose to Ernie, the red fighting type pokemon, after Scraggy beat two pokemon prior. Scraggy being a baby was reasonable it didn't make it that far.

In the Junior Cup his loss was a bit iffy, but at least he beat Iris' Dragonite which was arguably the strongest pokemon in it.

His fights with Trip early in the saga and to Cameron didn't make sense, but that's not how how he's portrayed in the Gyms or tournaments.

What they should of done is keep Ash more or less like he was in DP. No Trip or Cameron, have Ash without a rival besides Bianca and Stephen. Find some way to include the Team Plasma stuff early. Since he was still going to lose the league let him come in Top 4 again. Given him at least one fully evolved Unova starter and the other one in its middle stage.

What logic are you working on here? I just explained it, his main 3 pokemon were very powerful and you look at Ash's previous rivals and none of them were that strong outside of Paul/Alan. Gary was only ahead of Ash because Kanto Ash was a rookie, but Gary wasn't really that great.

Gladion is also definitely stronger than say Barry, Bianca, Stephen, Conway, Nando, Cameron, etc.

I think it's because all the worst aspects of BW stick out the most:

- Ash being reset for the first time ever
- Team Plasma eps being skipped then being lackluster when they do the arc
- Unova league is the worst league
- Declora Islands was a boring way to end the series
- Trip was worst main rival
- Cameron
etc.

But on an episode to episode basis, most eps are fairly decent.

Imagine the OP spoils Ash catching his own Scizor/Urshifu/ Galarian Legendary Bird or Mega evolving Lucario/Gengar or battling past rivals like Alain/Cameron . Nobody would have gave a dam about Goh's Flygon.

I'm really curious too. I don't know any gen 9 people since I dont have a switch. Kukui's the only viable gen 7 that I can think of but that's not likely unless we're getting a rematch against Ash will the wrastle cats. From gen 6 Diantha is possible I guess if we need someone for Ash to beat, he essentially won last time but he passed out too early. I doubt Korrina will make it to top 8 so I doubt any other gen 6 gym leader will. Alain retired as far as I know but who knows, maybe they'll have Ash beat him to appease us. The only person I remember from gen 5 is Alder? It would be interesting to see old rivals like Paul again. Maybe crush that Cameron guy with the lucario in the current power bracket. Agatha from the elite 4, Walace, that e4 guy with an Infernape too would be good. Basically I want match ups with old hyped up people.

Regardless, any match in the finals will be lame 1v1 giga pokemon by the looks of it. No intense 6c6 like Alain ever again.

You mean the same plot armor way that allowed Cameron to win against Ash with five pokemon? At least Cameron case was with one battle, Alain won every single battle with plot Armor.

There was probably some executive that loved him considering how he allowed Trip to win whole Junior Cup unscratched. He made Ash's battle with Trip at the league one on one to make Ash's victory unsatisfying and forced Ash to lose to Cameron in a humiliating way as a punishment for defeating Trip.

Seriously, BW series was definitely handled by somebody with a hate boner toward Ash. He even made Ash lose every BW Tournament arc in a humiliating way.
