It's been two years since Journeys ended, and thinking back, yeah, Goh's reasoning for wanting to leave Cerise Lab is just as dumb now as it was then. Obviously the real world answer is the writers had no fucking clue how to close out the series (or maybe they had entirely different plans to begin with, with Journeys continuing, or Goh/Chloe becoming the main protagonists). Regardless, Goh's logic for wanting to go out on his own is dumb as hell as he would stand to gain very little while giving up a whole lot. His position at Cerise Lab gave him the opportunity to pretty much go anywhere relatively quickly, so lots of opportunities for adventure, learning, and catching. The lab provided him with all sources of resources to expand his knowledge, and the park itself provided plenty of chances to study and learn about Pokemon. It would've made more sense to give Goh an ending where Project Mew didn't disband and have him leave with the rest to continue searching for Mew rather than the ending they did give him.
Sucks how not only did the lead up to the conclusion of Journeys suck (the M8 as a whole, and PM) but the way the writers came up with splitting up Ash, Goh, and Chloe was really stupid.
