I think it was just an organic response of "what could have been" posting. That and some new artists who liked Advanceshipping started drawing new stuff for basically the first time in 15 years. To be fair, shipping Chloe of all girls with Ash increased at the end of JN and afterwards, so maybe May's resurgence was just tied to a harem mentality that everyone wanted to draw Ash banging everyone while the iron was hot.
