They vehemently dislike how their boy had to share the spotlight with another protagonist, and a male one at that (at least if it was a girl, they could beat their meat to her and I guarantee they wouldn't care half as much about the focus not being on Ash). Go back to old threads on forums and you'll see people griping about how it should've been Ash who got the Gen 8 starters, Ash who should've got Suicune, Ash who should've had more episodes battling PWC opponents, etc... Going back to the other protagonist being male, that also made shippers furious since they couldn't even self-insert as Ash in JN since Chloe wasn't around Ash nearly as much. Yeah, there are legitimate criticisms people can and do have about how Goh was handled, but there was and still is a lot of irrational hate toward him, and yeah a lot of it does come from Ashfags.
