Miette is not worth calling a rival, we don't even know if she actually likes Ash or teasing Serena so there never was a true rivalry over Ash between them. Same goes to Shouta like Sawyer who was only introduced to lose to Ash because XY couldn't think of a better rival for Ash to defeat except for a eight year old shouta. It shows how much disrespect XY had for Ash for being a better & popular character than their precious little Alain.

DP series on the otherhand had a clash of ideology between Ash & Paul while Barry had fun interaction with Ash and Conway actually had a brain.

Speaking of DP's rivals, what did you guys think about them?
I remember liking Nando and how he participated in both contests and gyms, especially since he was pretty good in both areas (him beating Zoey after she criticized him for not specializing in only one area was pretty satisfying), same with Conway, even if he could be a little annoying and weird at times.
Zoey was also pretty fun.

Because Dawn at least deserves better than Kenny . Even if he wins, it will feel like pity. DP series was better off with a Kenny vs Conway episode instead of giving him a pity win against Ash right before the Sinnoh League conference.

Also, he is fairly handsome for his age. I mean, just compare him to any of his male companions or other boys in the show. Though at least Max has the potential to look like Conway (and later, Norman) when he is older, which explains why some girls were into him too.

So many memorable and funny characters that left a strong impact. DP was a pretty cheaply made series with lots of boring filler, but they absolutely killed it with the character writing.

For me, Roy was the major "icky" turnoff, like if it was just a story about Liko and Dot and the RVT, I'd be okay with it I guess but shoehorning Roy into the team felt very unorganic because he feels kinda unfitting in this type of story.
Because he's a blander version of Ash without any real personality so why even bother adding him if the pretense is being different from the previous seasons? I'd like Roy if OLM made his personality like Drew or Conway, literally anything but the Ash archetype.

Roy is basically the Team Rocket of Horizons, in the sense that a huge amount of screentime is wasted on him when he's just dead weight in the series, it made me lose genuine interest in the series pretty fast (20 episodes in)

I think you are correct for the most part, I remember that people didn't like gen4 filler as it reminded them of Johto, I think the only well received filler where the ones that are used characters like Conway and the other chick that was a breeder and had a crush on Ash, people loved the sense of continuity in DP but disliked the filler
Other than that you are for the most part correct in your assessment that Tobias was a hype killer, people even forgot the Meowth guy existed for a while
