BW series pretty much saved XY series from being the worst pokemon anime series. All you have to do is little comparison between DP and XY series. For example:--
-- DP series had the best female co-protagonist yet while XY had the most boring female lead who entire character revolve around her crush.
-- DP still had Brock while XY had the most dullest male companion yet
-- DP had rivals such Nando , Conway and Paul for Ash to defeat while XY only used newbie trainer as a punching bag rather than introducing better EXPERIENCED rivals for Ash to defeat.
-- The female lead, male companions & the rival of XY/XY&Z series had the character trait of " I am an insecure person with no confidence but now I will become more determined because the protagonist inspired me"
-- Imagine DP ending with Ash losing to Paul at Sinnoh League final & forced to release Infernape because clean Paul's mess, that's exactly how XY&Z ended.
XY was never a good transition from DP series since it ignored everything DP did better .
