The thing is girls usually make it obvious what their sexuality is. May and Serena clearly liked boys, Misty flirted with some male Gym leaders and early on had a crush on Ash, Iris was just a wild child so...

Dawn had none of that. Even other guys who crushed on her like Kenny and Conway she rejected them. The closest she had was her bond with Ash but that never went above sisterly stuff.

Dawn was one the few main girls who was never shown with a crush on a boy at any point of the series. Plus girly girls in anime are usually part of lesbian pairings.

If Dawn can't be with Ash the only real alternative for her was Zoey. She turned down both Kenny and Conway, and there's nobody else she interacted with much shipping wise.

Prior to Serena, I did think Pearlshipping was a possible endgame pairing for Ash, but Tomioka decided not to go in that direction.

Though XY had better animations, DP had better battles to watch (Ash vs Nando, Paul vs Barry, Ash vs Conway, Ash vs Paul and even Ash vs Tobias, against pretty much Shota vs Tierno, Ash vs Shota and Ash vs Alan) and the series were handled better than XY, even if you count Brock as a whole and the one year gap.
