Alan is so far unconfirmed to be going after gyms, but so was Conway and he ended up being Ash's second opponent in the Sinnoh League.

The foreshadowing in the Mega Special Act 1 practically confirmed that Ash and Alan will end up battling each other at some point whether it be at the Kalos League or just out in the open

Pic related, I thought this arc was pretty good. Ash vs. Paul was one of the most enjoyable battles to watch, and that last matchup with Infernape and Electivire was intense. I also liked Conway's battle, it was cool seeing Trick Room used in the anime.

I even enjoyed the battle between Ash and Tobias.

Ash vs Misty: Battles her in a WATER BASED tournament.

Ash vs May: Battles her in a contest (something he's unfamliar with) and at a type disadvantage (Sceptile vs Blaziken).

Ash (Paul) vs Dawn (Conway): Had god-awful team work with Paul, which made them struggle.

Ash vs Iris: Pikachu vs Excadrill? Really writers? That's basically the writers saying "Yeah we want Iris to win!".

I have a feeling Serena will get some large advantage over him when they inevitably battle.

Reminder that Conway was the best rival. He was basically Bizarro Ash because he strategizes ahead of time instead of improvising.

The anime kept building him up as some kind of creepy traitor or something but it never happened
