Kanto is fine. Orange Islands is filler, but original. Johto is when one would become numb with the insane amount of filler that follow the same plot. AG is the same as Johto, but the addition of contests shook some things up. DP is the same as AG and Johto. BW tried to do some things differently, but circumstances beyond control made it become more of the same and was a big burnout point for many who hadn't been burned out by Johto, AG, or DP.
Not even the movies are exempt. Most of them can be summarized as Ash and friends go to a festival in wherever the staff took a vacation at, shenanigans happen, they have to stop the big bad, and a Legendary or Mythical Pokémon is involved.
