There are two trainer classes in Unova that are basketball players and american football players in the stadium but outside of it I doubt that these sports were ever mentioned in the franchise. Dawn wore a cheerleader outfit in at least one episode and cheerleader outfits appeared more than once.
Baseball is a very popular sport in Japan if not the most popular one. That's why it appears so often in anime. I don't know how popular basketball is but I know that it isn't as popular as baseball there but it's not that uncommon that basketball is mentioned or appears in Japan.
American football is rather obscure outside of the US and Canada. Japan is a place where american football is more popular than usual and there is an anime about american football called Eyeshield 21 but it's still obscure there. I think rugby is a lot more popular there.
I live in a country where no american sport is popular except for basketball maybe but I like baseball because of my weebiness.
