I haven't played the Dawn VN so I didn't notice the similarity in the intros. I may have defaulted to it since trainers meeting through Pokemon is a franchise staple in general, and how it sets a story apart from other franchises or generic VNs. But the Glaceon feature was mainly to signpost a specific point in the anime timeline (after her DP cameo but probably before Journeys) since I was too lazy to find May portraits in her Emerald outfit at the time, so it can be scrapped anyway.
If the player is still going to first meet May at a contest venue, there are other options, for example maybe (You)'re the receptionist checking her ribbons or things like that.
