The comparisons would never be avoided regardless of how different, better or worse Roy is cmpared to Ash. It's typical for any series with a protagonist change whether it's Yu-Gi-Oh, Beyblade, Jojo's, Digimon, Macross, etc. It's just human nature. And when it comes to Pokemon, the comparisons are even more unavoidable due to Ash having been the lead for decades.
As for Roy, I see it as him becoming more like Friede than Ash. Ash didn't show consistent maturity until XY, and then he was reset in all aspects other than battling in SM. Roy is the ace of the group. He is the one with the powerful shillmons. He's the one who knows how to battle. He's the one who holds the group together since Liko cut contact with her old team including Dot. The kid is a natural leader which is why it makes more sense to compare him to Friede rather than Ash. Ash's personality falls somewhere between Uruto and Roy desu.
