The anime for a very long time instilled that strong bonds with the few Pokemon you have will overcome spread apart bonds with lots of Pokemon you have, highlighted the most when Ash beat Gary with his Charizard against his Blastoise, which is notable since Gary always caught so many more Pokemon than Ash ever did.
But now here comes a character that for the first time in the show, is there to catch practically everything he sees, and when you actually watch it occur, it’s… just not that entertaining. Pokémon in the anime are their own individual characters, and when one is added to the team, it’s almost always a big deal. Just catching them on sight took away from that special moment and development Pokémon would go through to the point where Goh eventually had a staple team (the Galar starters) and the showrunners toned down his catching drastically in the later half of the show, and switched his activities around to Project Mew. It practically acknowledged that watching someone just catch stuff all the time wasn’t the most exciting thing to watch, especially when this boy was supposed to be as much of a main character as Ash was.
His character was fine, and you could see the potential of exploring this little introverted boy. But my god, you could just feel the “Pokémon Go promotion” coming before his character for so long.
