I'm interested in reading your DPPt trio/Platinum hate rant. I never had a big problem with Platinum personally, nor was I a massive fan, but I do agree she is a Mary Sue to some extent and I haven't even read that arc in years. Though I was always under the impression Diamond was the bigger Gary Stu. A lot of the protagonists felt like Mary/Gary Stus to me honestly, especially Yellow, Ruby, and Emerald, but those three also had their fair share of suffering to balance it out. At least compared to how the DPPt's goofy tone allowed its protagonists to coast on easy mode (like you said, it's like a rich kid fantasy)
A lot of Special fans dropped off after BW, partially because of the BW2 arc hiatus. Around that time, the Pokemon Company had started shitting out games more frequently, and the rate they were forcing Special to keep up made Kusaka ill, and he had to take a break. Afterwards, there was a massive quality drop in general after the BW arc (or so I've heard, because I never read BW). A similar crunch occurred before too, when Kusaka was forced to write for the RS, FRLG, and the Emerald arcs all at the same time.
Even knowing that, not even fans of RS can defend the ending. Yet somehow, the original magazine ending for this arc was literally worse, because there was no ending (it cuts off after
the big glowy Sootopolis explosion). And sometimes I don't know which reality would be better.
I actually disliked the Yellow arc when I originally read it. It felt boring, and Yellow annoyed me. But for some reason I just don't hate her anymore, so I wonder if I'll feel differently after a reread.
