Honestly, I'm kinda impressed how anime kept Gary's choice of a starter as secret literally till the end of his fight against Ash in Johto league. The only mention of starter Squirtle was Samurai kid mentioning that it's trainer it beaten his ass before Ash but it was not revealed then who owned it.

Also I kinda liked the Charizard vs Blastoise finale. Ash and Zard really needed to think outside of the box and the plan with melting rocks in arena to force Blastoise to cool them down and create fuckton of steam was kinda 300 IQ.

Calling it now - that ship most likely manifested through a similar flavor of autism that made me unironically ship Saturn x Silver for some time during middle school. With some alterations, LGPE could easily be a reality where Giovanni truly returned to Team Rocket after Gold/Ethan failed to stop him. That way, the older Red and Gary would make a bit more sense.

Of course, KAAAANTOOO will need to be slightly altered for that. But honestly - Genwunners don't give a shit about anything beyond the Gameboy so they should alter away.

what people misremember is that you enter cerulean city for about 20 steps before getting ambushed, the pokemon center is located further to the right and all three of the towns prior to this were entered moving south to north. it's 100% possible to mistakenly walk past the house and take the left hand corner, especially if you just explored the house and went into the backyard. you don't "leave town" without going to a pokemon center because a kid in 1996 had no idea wtf the pokemon center was located, all the knew is that they entered a town and the only dangerous areas in the game are grass/gym/caves so it was it was safe to explore. then comes gary oak to send you and your low hp under-leveled team packing to the last pokemon center you used, which was just outside of mt moon. people who claim this situation is impossible unless you were borderline retarded more than likely first experienced kanto through generation 3 and not in 1996 on a handheld from 1989 with a screen the size of a postage stamp that had a bizzare yellowish green fart tint on everything.

I only really prefer 'Green' for Gary for two reasons.
The lesser reason is that Red and Green were the first two games in Japan, so it makes sense.
The more autistic reason that I have is that 'Green' can be an adjective for Oak.

The English names for Blue/Gary and Green/Leaf fit their starters better like when they have the correct matching starters like the sigma suit versions do in Mastersex. Japan Mastersex calls our Blue Green despite having a Blastoise. PokeSpe giving Red Bulbasaur was the most soulful choice they could have made though, so I can't fault them for not matching.

I agree it could have been done better. Well, the ending of DPP is trash anyway so it fits the theme.

As for Gary and season 1. I suppose it's less of a shonen and more of a fun, surreal anime from the 80/90s so it's fine if he is a big jerk who accomplishes nothing.

The problem, as it's been noted, is that most of the creative juice was used during the first 24 episodes.
It's not bad after that, but the early run is just kino after kino
